Our Experience in Cuba
Before the class left for our first adventure, the teachers and past Globalites attempted to inform us about the situations and experiences we would encounter in Cuba. We were told that this journey would change us. Many of us did not anticipate the impact our experiences would have on us. Over the course of two weeks we would be changed as individuals and our class would become an even closer and more connected family. We all spent every waking moment together, traveled on day trips, and experienced the Cuban culture together.
During our time in Cuba, we also cultivated relationships with our Cuban partners. They became our family away from home, they showed us love, acceptance, and most importantly how to dance Cuban style! They made it possible for us to be able to freely and safely explore the many cities and markets we traveled to throughout the trip. They also put on nightly performances which made learning about their culture and religion interactive and fun. In addition, our class was also fortunate enough to have music lessons from a professional musician. As a result, we came back musically experienced and sounding better than ever!
Throughout this trip many memories were made, tears of joy shed, and we returned home as more experienced travelers. We made international connections and increased our global perspective as international students. It should be noted that while in Cuba, many of the students were exposed to some of the issues that are effecting developing countries around the world. Many students returned home with a stronger appreciation for the countless opportunities and luxuries we take for granted in our everyday lives. As one of the students said on our way home “ fun times, tan lines and so much more!”
A big thank you to all of the incredible people that dedicated their time, efforts, and hard work to allow this once in a lifetime trip to take place.
